Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kinds of events are included in First Friday?
A variety of arts and entertainment exhibits, performances, and showcases will take places at venues throughout the downtown. Live music at some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes, plus art exhibits at many businesses and galleries provide plenty to take in on the evening. Art exhibits include photography, paintings, and sculptures, while music ranges from jazz groups to solo pianists and choral groups to guitar players.

Q: Where and when does First Friday take place?
All events associated with First Friday take place in Downtown Scranton on the first Friday of every month from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Q: Do I need to attend the events in any particular order, or make a stop at each venue?
Not at all. Pick and choose whatever events you wish to visit. A trolley is available from 6:30 to 8:30 to shuttle you around to all participating venues, but there is no order required and visitors are free to enjoy the venues at their leisure.

Q: How can I get a list of events and participating venues?
Visit This Month’s Map page for a listing of venues and events for the current month. You can also view maps from previous months in the Archives link on the same page.

Q: I have a downtown business that is interested in becoming a First Friday venue. What do I need to do to sign up?
Visit the Host an Event page and fill in the details. Deadline information regarding the upcoming event can be found on the page as well.

Q: As an artist, I am interested in being part of First Friday. How can I sign up to participate in the festivities?
Go to the Show Your Work page and fill in the details.

Q: Can I get updates via email about each month’s events?
Certainly. On every page we offer a field to sign up for the monthly mailing list. You’ll then get the First Friday map sent to you each month before the festivities.

Q: Does First Friday continue during the winter months?
Absolutely. First Friday is a year-round celebration of the revitalization of Downtown Scranton, with a full pallet of offerings on tap for every First Friday. Summer months often feature a variety of outdoor exhibits and performances to take advantage of the good weather, but the fun continues inside during winter as well.

Q: Does First Friday operate in conjunction with other events?
While First Friday is organized each month as a stand-alone event, it is not uncommon for the date to interact with other events that are planned around the same time. Examples include the Scranton Jazz Festival in August and La Festa Italiana during Labor Day Weekend.
