First Friday August Wrap-Up

These days, every first Friday of the month, downtown Scranton is a hub of activity buzzing with excitement and energy that is unrivalled in most of northeastern Pennsylvania.  In August it witnessed a collaboration of activities which sent the city into a fever pitch. Not even a whirling dervish could catch all that was going on. Jazz fest descended upon Scranton and opened its first night of performances on First Friday August 3rd complementing the artistic fervor that occurs the first Friday of every month. Syncopated strumming and drumming were only matched by the beating of feet and leather, albeit synthetic, on the streets of Wyoming Avenue. Jazz and art seems an easy match, but basketball. Why not? Lackawanna County’s 3-on-3 basketball tournament added another festive dimension to the many art events.
Throughout downtown Scranton First Friday revelers were met with colorful expressions. Art patrons bustled and moved throughout the city soaking in the many artistic and cultural offerings. First Friday is at its best a community event gathering people together into a display of pride. Whether it is creative expression in visual medium, performances in America’s truest musical art form, or athletic prowess First Friday is relevant as it allows its citizens to reflect on and enjoy past history and glean new perspectives about Scranton.
